What does a cardiologist do?

This type of medical professional is focused on preventing or managing issues with the heart, like heart attacks. He or she can run diagnostic tests, prescribe medicine, recommend lifestyle changes, and provide treatments for a patient. The goal is to assess a patient’s heart health and improve it through these means. This is called general cardiology.

At Apollo Cardiology, our cardiologist is Dr. Michael Twyman MD. He practices general cardiology but is also specialized in integrative medicine with a focus on getting to the root cause of your conditions.  He is an expert in heart attack and stroke prevention.  In 2017 he discovered “biohacking” and has been using this modality of health optimization to help patients make incremental changes to their lifestyle and environment to improve their heart health and overall health over time.

How do cardiologists check your heart?

As mentioned above, one of the responsibilities of the cardiologist is to assess a patient’s heart health. To do so, the cardiologist will check your vital signs including your blood pressure, heart rate, pulse oximetry level, and your height and weight. A thorough history and physical will be performed.  Testing may include advanced labs, imaging (CT Coronary Calcium Score, CIMT, Echocardiogram), stress tests, electrocardiogram (EKG), remote cardiac monitoring, or endothelial function testing (EndoPAT).

These services can help a patient prevent heart issues or keep an existing heart issue in check. With the ongoing assistance of a cardiologist, a patient with a heart issue can manage his or her symptoms better and possibly even return to the activities he or she used to enjoy prior to the onset of the condition.

How do I find a cardiologist?

There are a number of options here. One is to look online for a “cardiology office near me,” and another is to ask family or friends if they would suggest a particular cardiologist. Alternatively, you can ask your primary care physician for a referral. If you need a cardiologist in St Louis MO, then you can come see Dr. Michael Twyman here at Apollo Cardiology, and he is fully capable of helping and treating you. During the in-office or telemedicine consultation, you’ll be able to speak with the doctor about your heart health and any conditions you have, and receive any testing you require.
